Area Manager:  FAQs

When are Aldi recruiting for Area Managers?
We recruit all year round.

What qualifications do I need?
To apply you’ll be on track for, or have achieved a good degree. You will also have a strong academic pedigree prior to university. The degree subject is of less importance than the fact that you’ve done well in a subject that you’ve chosen.

Other than strong qualifications, what else will help my application?
As the role is primarily a people-leading role you’ll need to demonstrate an abundance of personal qualities including motivational skills, drive, a strong work ethic and equal measures of confidence and sensitivity.

What will the training involve?
Your training will last approximately one year, however, it's tailored to suit you and the exact duration will depend upon what you require. Experienced colleagues will take you in hand and show you all the different aspects of the organisation, your tasks as an Area Manager, and the key functions of the retail trade.

The training programme is typically split into six phases:

  • You shadow an experienced colleague to get an overall impression of the business and your responsibilities
  • You get to know how stores are organised and prepare for your tasks within them
  • Following your training, you will take on the management of two or three different stores as holiday cover
  • You will deepen and consolidate your knowledge and experience by spending time with other, more experienced colleagues in the organisation
  • You will provide holiday cover for various Area Managers thereby giving you a taste of things to come
  • You will concentrate on key aspects of the retail trade and gain an insight into our administration, logistics, purchasing and store development

Where will I be trained?
You can indicate in your application a preferred part of the country. Otherwise we will sort your application by your term or home postcode. On joining the Company you will train throughout the region and this is likely to involve some time away from home in a hotel or Company accommodation.

How will I be monitored and assessed?
You will receive constant feedback on your performance throughout the training and have plenty of opportunity to contribute your own thoughts on your development. You will receive day-to-day supervision from your trainer and regular updates with the Store Operations Director.

After training where will I be based as an Area Manager?
That depends on the opportunities that present themselves at the time. You’ll need to be prepared to move within the region but at the same time we will be aware of any preferences that you have. Once appointed to an area we aim to keep you there for the duration of your time as an Area Manager.

Are there prospects for international travel?
Yes. Area Managers have the opportunity for two year secondments to Europe or further afield.

What prospects can I look forward to?
Within five years there is every chance of an appointment to director in the areas of store operations, logistics, administration, trading, property or central buying. Again, flexibility regarding location is a necessity as these appointments are made throughout the UK.
